My placement with the Disarmament and Security Centre (DSC), through the University of Canterbury's PACE program, has been an incredibly rewarding experience. During my time at DSC, I had the opportunity to contribute to the organisation’s operations, by helping draft internal policies on health and safety, communication, employment, and finance. This not only honed my professional skills but also deepened my understanding of the vital role DSC plays in advancing global peace and security.
One of the highlight of my placement was with Lucy delivering an inspiring public talk at a local school, where she presented about DSC's current and past work. It was incredible to see the students' enthusiasm and engagement, and it truly felt like the next generation of peace and security advocates was being shaped. I also had the privilege of meeting the passionate founders, Kate and Rob and many other respectable members of DSC. Their unwavering dedication to disarmament and security through research, education and advocacy left a lasting impression on me.
I have been very fortunate to be mentored by Lucy, whose expertise in leadership, project management, and public speaking skills provided me with invaluable insights that I will carry forward in my career. Lucy’s guidance and incredible support has been instrumental in helping me grow both professionally and personally.
This placement has been an extraordinary opportunity to learn, contribute, and be part of a cause I truly believe in. I'm deeply grateful to the DSC team for their support and for giving me the chance to be involved in such meaningful work. DSC’s commitment to global peace is inspiring, and I will carry the lessons I've learned with me as I move forward in my journey.
