Stories of Peace: Reverend George Armstrong and the Peace Squadron

July 17, 2018
Stories of Peace

The Reverend Dr. George Armstrong has spent his life working for peace and social justice. He is an Anglican Priest based in Auckland, Aotearoa / New Zealand.

In the 1970s and 1980s, George established and helped to lead the Peace Squadron, a citizen protest movement that opposed and disrupted the visits of nuclear armed war ships to New Zealand. This contributed to the broad social movement that helped create a nuclear free New Zealand in 1984.

Inspired by the actions of Quakers in the USA, the Peace Squadron filled New Zealand’s harbours with protest vessels of all shapes and sizes, seeking to block entry by nuclear warships.
